December 2nd, 2008

Fats are essential nutrients in normal routine as well as during pregnancy. The excessive intake, however, is not so good. During pregnancy, as body requires more energy than normal routine, so does it need Fats. Fats are an important source of energy, and they help metabolize vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Since, fats supply a lot of calories, so excessive use is not good. Better is to limit the fat intake to no more than one-third of daily count. More intakes will result in unnecessary weight gain, and pregnancy may have complications.

A balanced amount of fats can be made out of any four of the following servings daily:

  • 2 ounces cheese
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup tuna salad
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 3 or 4 ounces lean meat
  • 1 egg or egg yolk
  • 1/2 small avocado
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Experts also suggest to intake more healthy fats, i.e. including olive, canola, and peanut oils etc during cooking. Avoid less desirable saturated fats, found in meat and dairy products, as well as palm and coconut oils.
